Camp de Thiaroye
The true story of African soldiers
who fought for France during World War II, many of whom were held in German
prisoner-of-war camps. After being sent back to the French-ruled Senegal in
1944, colonial authorities place them in a transit camp where they begin to
feel like prisoners. Their shabby treatment after risking their lives for
France leads to rising anger and a violent confrontation. Winner of the Venice
Film Festival Special Jury Prize.
Director: Ousmane Sembene,
Senegal, 1987, 152 min., Wolof and French with English subtitles
